How to Wash and Care for Compression Socks: Make Them Last Longer

How to Wash and Care for Compression Socks: Make Them Last Longer

Why Proper Care Matters

Compression socks are an investment in your health and comfort. Unlike regular socks, they contain specialized elastic fibers that provide graduated pressure — and those fibers can break down quickly if you don't care for them properly. With the right washing routine, a good pair of compression socks can last 6 months or more.

How to Wash Compression Socks

Hand Washing (Recommended)

  1. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water — never hot
  2. Add a small amount of mild detergent (gentle or delicate formula)
  3. Gently squeeze and knead the socks — do not wring or twist
  4. Rinse thoroughly until no soap remains
  5. Press out excess water by rolling in a clean towel — never wring

Machine Washing (If Needed)

  • Use a mesh laundry bag to protect the socks
  • Select the delicate or gentle cycle
  • Use cold water only
  • Mild detergent only — avoid fabric softeners and bleach

How to Dry Compression Socks

  • Air dry only — lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight
  • Never use a tumble dryer — heat destroys the elastic fibers
  • Never dry on a radiator or near any heat source
  • Allow to dry completely before wearing again

What to Avoid

  • ❌ Hot water (breaks down elasticity)
  • ❌ Tumble dryer or direct heat
  • ❌ Fabric softeners (coat fibers and reduce compression)
  • ❌ Bleach or harsh chemicals
  • ❌ Wringing or twisting
  • ❌ Ironing

How Often Should You Wash Them?

Wash your compression socks after every wear. This removes sweat, oils, and bacteria that degrade the fabric — and actually helps restore the elasticity temporarily by rehydrating the fibers.

When to Replace Your Compression Socks

Even with perfect care, compression socks lose their effectiveness over time. Replace them when:

  • The fabric feels loose or baggy
  • They no longer feel snug when you put them on
  • You notice visible wear, thinning, or holes
  • It's been 6 months of daily use
